12 young people from the ages of 10 - 14 were causing a nuisance with many of them receiving an ABC (Actual Behaviour Contract). Child X was one of these young people. She had recently gone through a very traumatic period when Her father unexpectedly died. It was very evident that she had major anger issues especially at home where she was often violent towards her mother and other members of the family.
After joining YouthPoint there was an obvious improvement in her behaviour towards the staff of the project, but she was still experiencing difficulties in school and was eventually excluded and sent to a behavoural unit. As part of her alternative curriculum she was placed with our project one day per week to study for NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration. Within the safety of our centre she flourished, her new found confidence led to improved behaviour at home and in college.
In January this year child X visited the concentration camps in Poland as part of our Reflection project. Here she received three AQA qualifications. One of these qualifications was for presentation skills which were put to the test when she gave a presentation to over 200 people as part of the National Holocaust Memorial Day celebrations.
Her behaviour and attitudes have been transformed and the maturity and confidence she gained throughout the year led to her being invited to act as Peer Mentor for this years group. Her commitment to the project has been outstanding, attending every session to support staff and help to plan and develop future class curriculum.
